Top 5 Hosted Blog Publishing Services
This is a list of the top 5 hosted blog platforms. A hosted blog platform is one that is hosted for you as opposed to one you host yourself.
- Blogger (Blogspot) – a free blog publishing service that allows private or multi-user blogs with time-stamped entries. It was created by Pyra Labs, which was bought by Google in 2003. Generally, the blogs are hosted by Google at subdomains of blogspot.com, but custom URLs can be used. You can make money online by adding ads or other widgets.
- LiveJournal – a free blog service where you can build your own list of friends and read their updates via RSS feed. A paid subscription lets you blog from your phone and protect your updates by selecting the users who can access your blog, or make it so you can be the only one who can read it. Customized URLs are not available.
- TypePad - is a blogging service from company Say Media (from the merger of Six Apart Ltd and VideoEgg). Originally launched in October 2003, TypePad is based on Six Apart’s Movable Type platform, and shares technology with Movable Type such as templates and APIs, but is marketed to non-technical users and includes additional features like multiple author support, photo albums and moblogging. The service is available in several languages and countries around the world, but in the United States is sold at three different paid subscription levels.
- Windows Live Spaces – Windows Live Spaces is a free service from Microsoft to create a blog. You can access Live Spaces with your Windows LiveID, and integrate inside your blog the content you have on other Microsoft services, like SkyDrive. Your blog, or “Space“, is organized in re-arrangeable modules around the page.
- WordPress.com – a free, highly-customizable blog (due to an extensive plugins and theme base) which allows you to have multiple users with different permission levels. It has built-in RSS and widget functionality (depends on the theme) and custom URLs are available for a small fee. Note that this services varies from the WordPress.org blog platform that requires your own hosting.
